Nature as restoration

Scientific insights into how nature supports mental clarity, balance, and connection

Modern life places constant demands on our attention, leading to mental fatigue, while natural environments restore focus through effortless “soft fascination,” as described in the work of Kaplan and Kaplan. This research forms the foundation of my practice as a ceramic artist, my driving force to reconnect people in our urbanized world with nature, supported by studies such as those by Gregory N. Bratman, showing that even brief exposure to nature can reduce stress and negative thought patterns.

Echoes of Nature

The story of Nyctinasty, Daucus Carota: a sleeping plant

Discover Echoes of Nature, a ceramic wall installation exploring the hidden sleep cycle of the Daucus Carota, a native Dutch plant. Daucus is a native dutch plant that grows in almost every place you can go. While passing it looks like a regular plant, but what will only show as the sun goes down is a mesmerizing, rhythmic movement called Nyctinasty, that reveals a story hidden in plain sight. Click down below to read more about my research and how I visualize this story.
