About the creator:

Juna Ninetta Miedema (2001) is an artist and designer based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Growing up in the center of Utrecht, she spent her weekends in nature at her parents’ caravan on Camping Bakkum. Her time spent in the woods, dunes and the beach left a lasting impression. This early connection has become the driving force behind her mission to reconnect people in an increasingly urbanized world with the often-overlooked presence and influence of nature.

In her work, she aims to reconnecting people with the value and impact of nature, even in its smallest forms. Her fascination with natural elements and their hidden qualities is reflected in her practice. She positions herself at a cross-over between art and science, where intuition and research come together. Her intuitive way of working in ceramics, in which she responds to personal associations combined with scientific insights, creates a distinctive approach to designing.

She bases her work on scientific research alongside an in-depth study of natural elements, primarily plants, as well as fungi and lichens. By closely observing these organisms, ranging from their habitats to their less visible characteristics, she translates subtle details into abstract, hand-build sculptures. This process results in layered forms and visual research, which together shape unique identities within her work. Her sculptures attract attention through recognition, while maintaining interest by evoking associations and imagination.
